What are Fillings?

Dental fillings are an effective means of restoring a tooth once decay has been removed. A filling material will be used to fill and reshape the tooth back to its normal shape. By enclosing the spaces inside a tooth that has decayed, it prevents bacteria from entering.

You can expect to get plenty of benefits associated with dental fillings including:

  • Lasts for 15 years
  • Prevents tooth decay
  • Supports a weak tooth
  • Enhanced functionality

Types of Fillings

There are many types of fillings that are used in the modern dental industry today.

  • Composed of 50% mercury alloy such as copper, zinc, and tin
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Maintains strong chewing forces
  • Silver in color
  • Matches the natural color of your teeth
  • Composed of powdered glass or acrylic resin
  • Moderate amount of chewing pressure

Before getting fillings, we will analyze your mouth and teeth in order to determine which area needs treatment. The dentist will numb the affected area with local anesthesia to alleviate the pain. A laser or a drill may be used to remove the parts containing tooth decay.

After the decay is removed, the filling will be put into the newly cleaned tooth. As always, we recommend making follow-up appointments so we can check on your progress!
